Ah, ha! You helped me remember an old thread I started where PainterDave jumped in and blew us out of the water with pictures of his work. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=27215&p=202219&hilit=Spray+Chrome#p202219 1968 Coronet R/T

No problem call any time you like. or we could start a thread? I have done many many parts most all still look good to this day. Dave's stuff is Really really cool I wish I had the equipment for spraying that stuff. Its very expensive to get into at the level he is at I would think $20K plus! just to get started by the time you get into the good equipment and Good water supply equipment for a good supply of De ionized water. And that would be just the basic stuff hes got the Bad **** stuff! Much more cost effective to just send him parts to have him finish them, I plan to send him a Whole bunch of stuff soon. Plating: What Transformer are you using? What chemicals where you using? (Who made the stuff?) What were you using for hanging your Parts? What were you using for leads? off your Transformer (Pos & Neg) (What material ?) What kind of Bus Bar are you using to hang parts from? I had one Batch I thought had gone bad but was caused from contamination I had added to the mix unknowingly My Anode wire connection had a Butt splice eyelet with a screw and nut holding my Anode that I had let get submerged into the solution and was transferring metal from eyelet and screw and nut into my solution as an Anode after I figured it out I was able to save the chemicals by plating action of two real Anodes at same time one pos one neg and cooked the solution clean then filtering solution threw multiple Coffee filters. Its very important that you only use Copper to hang parts with from your Hanging rod and Never reuse them! Also never let your Anode lead ever come in contact with the solution see above! only allow the part its hanging wire and your Anode to be submersed in solution!!!! Very important! Again see above!!! Other problems with finish come from too much current or not enough current from your Transformer/Power supply. (Batteries can be used for a power supply) Very important not to use too much current, The math for figuring out parts total square inches then figuring out total current is a bother but must be learned! I found out after doing it correctly by the book for a while figuring out parts square inches & doing the conversion to current I could do other similar size parts with out doing all the calculations every time. You just learn what to look for. I go buy the bubbles off the Part or rather what looks like Smoke in the fluid. Very very fine very very small almost invisible that's when current is close. I also have learned to use a Balance resistor in my load and or a Light bulb works as well, It Helps with controlling the current the voltages and currents used in the process are very low and can be a pain to control with small parts using a resistor or Light bulbs makes the transformer think parts are bigger allowing more current to be used higher currents are easier for the Transformer to control. Another problem with finish is not enough fluid flow around the parts, its important to keep your solutions moving with a Pump or Pumps!!! There are also Bags to bag your Anodes in when in solution made from a material similar to Coffee filters that help. Also Temperature of solutions some solutions and materials like to be at certain temperatures requiring heaters and or Chillers! I started with Simple Fish Tank water pumps and Fish Tank water heaters and hot plates and simple 5 gallon buckets, Its snow balled from their. If you use a Hot plate to heat solution just heat up solution in Stainless pot then return solution back to plating tank when its hot and maintain heat with Fish tank heater. I have also used Automotive engine Circulating pumps for keeping engines warm, but chemicals do eat them after a while. The solutions are very caustic. Real chemical pumps and chemical heaters are kinda expensive when first starting out. I sure didn't wanna spend that kind of money when I first started, Now its kind different. I get good results with what I have for equipment I think? but don't let me fool you there is a learning curve. Although its not considered Plating - Black Oxide: I am Still not happy with my Black Oxide attempts, another coating used in Autos. It needs Very Hi Temps to do it right (350 degree water!) The Cold Black Oxide stuff sold online is a waste of money and is very expensive! It does make a nice black coating but does not last when left in the elements on cars unless you continually apply conditioner to keep finish looking good. The Cheapest & best way I found yet is get parts extremely clean then Heat parts ungodly hot then dip in Old used engine oil. The resulting finish is Hit or miss with the darkness of each part very inconsistent but the protection does last a while. I have heard and seen some use special Wax instead of oil but I have not tried it. Gun Blueing Salts are another option but again Very hi temps (600 degrees!) very dangerous to play with really bad burns possible. Again Results can also be hit or miss as well from what I understand from my study on the subject. Dennis B.

Dennis, i'm for sure going to get with you on this. i have all my stuff put away right now and getting ready to leave for a month and travel to South Dakota and everywhere in-between, just might be in your area on the way back. anyway sounds like you know a lot more than i do, defiantly would like to talk with you when i get back. i do fiberglass bumpers for drag cars, could be ok for a show car, but not so much for something driven daily Experienced Trained Certified
