Hi Guys,

Prepped a fiberglass bike fender for primer. Washed it really well with Dove. Wiped it down with w/g remover. Sanded down to 100 dry. w/g again and shot 2 coats of epoxy primer. Crinkled in several areas. All I can think of is the solvents got thru to the old paint. Other than a total strip, do I have other options? Funny thing, there were other parts (fiberglass) and none of them reacted this way.

Old paint. Yeah, I'd much the same with old paint. The thinners acted acted like a paint stripper and made the old paint (probably a rattle can type paint) go wrinkly.

No way to tell but it locked like original paint...mid '80's. I have a feeling, that the more I sand the old paint back it will still have a crinkle line...I think it all needs to go. Am I wrong?

You pretty much confirmed my thoughts. No point in trying to fix something that really needs to go straight back to the bare material. Maybe a pro could salvage it but that is not me.

I'm surprised usually epoxy is good over anything, did you reduce the epoxy?

No, it was a1:1 with catalyst. I even gave it a dusting coat and came back 5 min later to lay it on.

Since the other parts were fine, I just wonder if this fender was repainted over the years and I am dealing with NON factory paint. Funny, the stripes it had matched all the other parts so I thought it was all the original paint. Strange.

how long between using the WAG and spraying the epoxy and how heavy were the coats of epoxy?

when using the WAG- did you spray it on, let it sit for a bit, then wipe it off or did ya soak a rag and wipe?

Waited about 20 min, maybe a bit longer. I sprayed the WG remover on and wiped it off. 2 med. wet coats of epoxy.
