Im in the process of fixing up an old truck, it has been painted a different color at some point than what it originally was when new. Im wanting to repaint it back to its original color (Silver) but also want to keep some of the patina that is on the front fenders and hood. Im not really into the fake patina, so would rather preserve some of the original where its currently just rust and no paint.
How would I go about preserving some of the patina, adding new paint and still tying it all together? Thanks.

Start by posting some photos of the truck.

I will get flack for this post I am sure but I cant help it .....
Just remember opinions are like Butts with orifices everyone has one and some stink! lol!
Also remember the Internet is devoid of almost all emotion so take what I say with a grain of salt....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose

How to preserve it? lets ask a bunch of guys who go too long strides to destroy it, Cut it out, Blast it off, Wire wheel it, and remove it with Acids so they can repaint it and ask them how to preserve it?

To preserve it? :
Its simple really, Be lazy and don't touch it as the rest of vehicle will soon match it, its sure to be worth zero by then.

I myself see an old rusted out C model that needs fenders, body work, paint & probably a lot more. No amount of clear coat shiny or Matt will ever change that.

"Patina"

Potential buyer / Admirer of old car or truck sees what it could be in his mind and says: I can fix that "It just Needs a Paint job" or "That would be really cool when its fixed up & restored"

Delusional Owner/Flipper that dreams of doing restoration work :
"That's not Rust! That's Patina!" "It adds character!" "Its worth more that way!"

I tell you what I must be Rich because I have a yard full of old classic muscle cars just covered with PATINA !

Sorry,

I didn't see you photos until Dennis responded.

Post more photos showing the whole truck.

That's a lot of "Patina" you got going there.

It would be hard in my opinion to blend new silver with a gloss clear with that much rust.

Those C10s have a low body line, you could start there, do all your metal work below that line, shoot some silver BC then shoot the entire truck with a low-gloss clear.

I use a low sheen clear from "The Coating Store" over metallic BCs for some of my interior pieces. Most of my stuff I now purchase from Tamco, HOK or PPG. But I don't like the Tamco low gloss clear and I am too poor to buy big name clears in low gloss.

I wouldn't worry about trying to match any factory color since you want to keep the rust which (again in my opinion) looks dumb (is it Patina/Rust or not?) when covered in a high gloss clear.

Anytime that I see a "Patina" truck on a high-dollar build, it always makes me think that the guy just didn't want to shell out the $30k-$60k or more to have it done right. It is kind of the same on low dollar or home builds but more understandable. The material costs alone are staggering and just going up, up, up. In less than a year my Tamco custom color quarts have gone from $75 to $145/qt.

I have seen some high dollar fake patinas that were executed quite well, just not my cup of tea. But then I started here because I wanted to learn how to do "Piano Black" on sub enclosures that really never get seen - that was a few years and many many many dollars ago!

But in the end, it is your truck, do what you want and post more photos.
