Hi All, Sanded away a bad paint job down to the OEM paint. I have some pigtails after sanding w/ 320 grit. When I try and sand them out I sand thru to bare metal in some places. Will 2k high build primer cover the pigtails? Also, I have some bare metal especially along the inside door jambs and trunk channel. I was going to spot prime with self etch but was warned against it by E******d the manufacture. They said to use epoxy primer to spot prime instead. So I'm thinking of just doing one coat of Epoxy primer to seal followed by 2 coats high build/2 base coats/
2 CC's. Is this too many layers risking failure? Thanks V

what was the reson to sand and leave the oem paint? and is the oem a base clear system?

Saving some sanding, oem is good condition, good substrate. Yes BC/CC system.

I doubt it, if it has already been resprayed, but with P320 pigtails it definitely isn't now.

What most people don't realise is that it's next to impossible to sand down to a particular layer and keep the surface smooth and level. Pigtails mean you were using an orbital sander. I'd be fairly confident that the use of guide coat and a straight, hard block would show up highs and lows all over the panel and these will be very visible after painting.

Just take it back to metal and do the job properly.

Well.....any other ideas, that's not gona happen. Not sure what you mean by resprayed...I'm prepping to spray....nothing's been sprayed yet. Pigtails are in a handful of random spots on different panels. As I said when I do sand them out it winds up taking me to bare metal. Can I use spot putty to fill them or is it even necessary.Thanks V

Bottom line is that I'm offering advice on how to achieve the best job. Sometimes that involves a bit more work, but that's better than having to do it all over again if it fails.

get some 80 grit and sand all the paint OFF. on some DA's you can lock the pad from orbiting. this can somewhat speed up the operation to get the bulk off then go back to orbital and finish sand it.

Just to clarify: I acquired the car (which was originally white) that was sprayed with flat black paint....terrible job with over spray on the windows, door cards and elsewhere. I sanded the flat black off and sanded the OEM with 400. So....I'm left with the white OEM paint sanded with 400 and a few burn thru spots to metal.

Hmm...Well is this the correct process then?
Sand to bare metal w/ 80 grit (don't know what grit to finish with)
Shoot w/ self etch primer
Shoot high build primer
Guide coat sand 400 or 600 grit
Shoot BC then Clear and color sand and buff.
Of course with all cleaning and tack in between.(no solvents on BC and CC)

You might have talked me into it if its REALLY going to make a difference
The worst will be the door jambs and the trunk channels ....not sure how cleaned up they have to be. The engine bay, undersides of hood/trunk and insides of the doors I decided to shoot with single stage over OEM scuffed. I might consider going to metal on all the outside surfaces, like I said the most challenging there would be the Jambs and channels.
What say all?
PS What if i get pigtails in the metal? Just sayin??
on the flip side:
Its an 08 Porsche Boxster with absolutely no rust and straight panels. If going to metal I will be taking off all that galvanized factory protection. I'm actually on the fence.
