Howdy- first post here. I'm looking for a very black paint, I did a search first and found Ford Ebony black but all I could find in spray cans was a host of clacks for different manufacturers cars which compounds my confusion. This is for a bicycle so auto parts store acrylic lacquer is just fine- then a clear coat after decals. the closest thing I've found is a Hyundai Ebony black BHY1803. But like I say- there's a black for just about any car ever made so I'm relying on y'alls vast expertise.
TIA

Toyota Black (Paint Code 202) and BMW Schwarz (Paint Code 086) are both pure Jet Black. Both should be available in Dupli-Colour or a similar spray can range.
The Toyota colour is quite a bit less translucent, having a lot more tinter than the BMW colour which will enable full coverage in less coats. The final colour is, however, the same. Chris

@ 68- wowsa, that is black. But like I say- all I've been able to find is that Hyundai Ebony black. I guess really the biggest thing is in the direct sunlight I don't want it to look a dull grey.

Sorry, I missed the part about a bicycle. You probably wouldn't want to spend the money on the black's that I pictured.
You can go to a local automotive paint dealer and request the black you want in a special spray can that contains hardener. (Can't remember the name of them, maybe someone will help with that?) They can also get you clear coat mixed as well. This will give you a longer lasting paint job. 1968 Coronet R/T

Just make sure you put enough on and i would use a dark color primer one would think black will cover in one coat, not so. some are quite translucent as NFT5 states. i think this is the main problem with black is that people don't put enough on then your out in the direct sunlight and your black has that brown or gray hue to it.

This is the same colour as the Toyota 202 that I mentioned earlier. High concentration of tinter vs binder means low transparency and faster coverage. The tinter is "Jet Black" which is a cleaner, slightly bluer colour than the older style "dirty" blacks which have a brown undertone. A few years ago the paint companies brought out a special black which is even blacker than Jet Black, but to my knowledge it's never been used in a stand alone colour, only as one of the tinters in a few Korean and Japanese colours. It's also hellishly expensive.
Yes, this is a metallic black, so you see the aluminium flakes in the sunlight. There are other variants using more or less metal flake and some which use pearl (mica) flake for blue, red, green, violet highlights. What you want is not these, but a solid black, which is what I recommended above. This is what it looks like: Chris

Thanks NFT5
Was thinking for a moment about the Hyundai Ebony but now undecided BTW- would an onyx black be of the non- metallic variety? Last edited by Black Bicycle on Wed Feb 21, 2024 12:41 pm, edited 6 times in total.
