Hey, all! I recently bought Dura Gold paper, in 1000, 1500, and 2000 grits. My first sanding job was on a guitar I painted a couple weeks ago. Did it with 1000, up to 2000, then 3000 Trizac on a DA. When finished buffing, I had scratches. Went back with 1500, didn't take them out. Went back to 1000, didn't take them out. I DO know how to do this! I'm thinking that the sandpaper might be the problem. Anyone else use this brand? problems? I'm thinking inconsistent grain size. It's definitely NOT dirt or contamination, as I've been meticulous with cleaning and wet sanding it. And I can see it shows in the direction of my sanding.

So are you using the "green film" backer discs or are you using other hand/paper backed stuff?

Regular wet-dry sheets, not DA paper (except the 3000 Trizak)

Yep, we have tried that stuff before and I thought it was too scratchy for us as well. Now their green mylar film sheets for ro/da work in 5 and 6 inch widths work great. This was a table top we did in catalyzed lacquer all machine up in those green discs dry.

I bought some of their stuff but wasn't impressed.
For Wet/Dry sandpaper I have been using these guys: https://www.usa1abrasives.com/collectio ... 8159000716 Reasonably priced and I have a box of 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit. It lasts a long time as well. Usually use about two sheets of the chosen grit per vehicle 1968 Coronet R/T

OK, dug up some old DA sheets I had picked up a long time ago. After using a few times, I didn't like the pigtails they left behind, no matter how much I sanded with the next finer grit.
Just did a quick 1500, then 3000 Trizac on the DA. Much better! Pretty sure it's the sandpaper that's the problem, as you two have suggested. Thanks for the confirmation. |
I find that when sanding dry with a DA, I have to lower the rpms to prevent pig tails.
