I'mgetting ready to repaint the hood on my jeep after an a tree limb fell on it. My ? is if i have to sand all the way down to the metal orjust down to the factory base coat. I'll be repainting it the factory color using b/c paint. This is more of an experiment then n e thing cause chances are it's just gonna get scratched up on the trail eventually. I'm sure i'll have plenty of other ? as well cause if all goes well i might repaint the whole truck some day soon

Thanks!!

You do not need to take all of the paint off as long as the paint is not chipping or peeling. However you do need to scuff the existing paint finish. Scotch-Brite pads or 500-600 grit sandpaper works great for scuffing shiny surfaces. The rough finish left after scuffing provides good adhesion for your coat of sealer. After your sealer is applied sand to your liking, wipe it down with wax and grease remover, then apply basecoat. (Don't forget wax and grease remover before sealer too).
