If you were used to shooting lacquer you should have picked a simple solid color base/clear system for your shoot. Modern auto paint systems really now don't handle much different from those old lacquers going through the gun, but they build with very few coats and they are much easier to troubleshoot. The base color coats go on thinner and satin/flat like looking and the only place you can even make the system run is in the clear, which is quite simple to fix. Modern clears flow so well that even if I get a minor run I can thin it with my finger when wet and blow more clear over the area....it flows out with maybe only a minor sand/leveling of that area later.
