Just doing my own vehicle, not for professional use. Would it be essential to have variable speeds? If only one speed, how many rpm is good? I read that too high rpm burns the original paint off. Looking for something cheap-ish. Can I spend $40 and get something decent? thanks

You won't have to worry about burning the paint with a random orbital,
unlike a buffer, they don't spin very fast, they orbit and are made for finish work.
Like polishing or waxing. Way to slow to actually buff paint out.
Most painters don't even use one, they just use a buffer and a soft
pad for finishing or polishing.
Variable speed is a must, and a variable speed trigger switch
makes buffing a lot less messy when you can start slow and throttle
up to a set speed.
I buff around 1800 rpm with large wool pads and a little faster with
smaller foam ones. But it can vary a lot by what you're working on.
