Hi all. I’ve just painted a few panels of a truck and I can still see sanding marks after buffing and polishing.
I’ve only done some of the panels, I haven’t touched the last 2 because I don’t want the same outcome.
The color is a dark green and I finished sanding with 1500 grit and polished with 3M compound/foam pad. That didn’t work, so I lightly sanded it again with 2000 grit and used a new orange foam pad with M105. I’ve gone over the panels like 4 times with compound. Some scratches are gone but some are still there.
The reflection looks nice but the scratches ruin it.
I am going to try M100.
Do I have to sand the panel again for the M100?
Should I get a wool pad?
Sanding scratches after buffing. Buff more or re sand?

You can go directly to the M-100. The M-105 has fillers in it that make the surface look scratch free until you clean it.
After the M100 you should move to polishing compound (I like Chemical Guys V36) and pad. This will refine the scratches even more and after that you can go with a finishing compound (I like Menzerna Super Finish Plus 3800) and pad. 1968 Coronet R/T

Sorry to semi highjack the thread but, do you feel that Chemical Guys V36 would be better than Meguire's 205? My last job was done with 100 and then the 205. I called it done at that point--would the Menzerna Super Finish Plus 3800 make a big difference? |
Thank you. I will hit it with the M-100 tomorrow. The fillers in M-105 explains why a panel always looked good to go and when I’d wash the car, I’d see it actually wasn’t ready. The chemical guys V36 says it’s a cutting polish. If I leave the panel alone after M-100 and V36, what will be the result? Will I see swirls? What do you think of the M-205? I have a small amount left. Is the V36 just way better? What pad should I use on the M-105? I have an orange foam cutting pad and A 3M 05723 cutting pad. For polishing I have a black foam pad. I use Lake Country CCS pads: https://www.lakecountrymfg.com/category ... egoryID=56
White for polishing with Chemical Guys V36 (you can use Meguiars M250 if you have it or a similar polish) Black for final polishing with Menzerna 3800 (this will give you great clarity as it removes super fine scratches.) From the CCS line, what pad do you recommend for the initial M100 cut? |
I like a twisted wool pad for the first go around. Then I move to the foam pads. 1968 Coronet R/T

I'll look to see what they have--thanks!! I used a generic wool pad but it was in a super cheap bundle from Amazon I had sitting here--seemed to work O.K. but I'm sure there is better. |
