Well, there you go, my bad. My PTG measures in μm, not mils. :knockout:

Seriously though, if you leave a visible smear of filler on the sides and at the bottom of the run then you're never actually sanding into the clear in those thinner areas until you get up to about P1500 and then all you do is take the filler off. Probably not reducing clear thickness as much as doing a full cut and buff.

Next time I get a run (should be sometime in 2022  ) I'll measure the thicknesses.

IMHO, the secret is a small, hard timber block, about 60x20mm and starting with P400. That knocks the run down with less rubbing and while the surrounding areas are still protected. If you use a rubber block, even a hard one, you do risk going through.

Sounds like you are qualified to pull it off, i believe you can do it.

make sure to repost that run in 2022 :rotfl:

Don't worry, I will probably have enough runs before 2022 to try both methods.

And if I can't get my 5500 to shoot correctly, I'm gonna need to send it to PD for a quick "OFB, WTH did you do to that 5500" review

My first time dealing with runs in the clear. This is 4 coats of clear.
P1010001.JPG

Started out just trying to sand them down but noticed I was hitting the areas around the runs.
P1010006.JPG

Grabbed a piece of Oak and wrapped my sandpaper tightly around it so I could concentrate on sanding just the runs.
P1010008.JPG

Continued until the runs were level to the surface. Here you can see how close I was to having the runs removed.
P1010002.JPG

Once I had them level, I wet sanded the entire quarter with 1000, 1500 and 2000 and then buffed.

That I am just not sure of. I had that 5500 shooting beautiful before, but I think maybe one of the air horns got clogged or something??? :?:

It shot like crap and I ended up switching over to the Sagola. I did clean the 5500 and am going to take it apart to give it a look to see if I can see anything and then test it out on some more clear. If I cant figure it out, I will box it up and ship it out to you for a going over.

I have to admit, It might be petty but that makes me feel better. (don't know what happened to the photos??)

At least until I burn through my paint with my buffer this weekend - more than likely right near the end after I have spent too much time on it!!!

When you moved onto the 1000 etc paper, did you use a regular rubber/foam block - like a Motor Guard roller block?

No, I used the Oak but changed to the 1000 grit. After that I use a Motorguard soft block for 1500 and 2000.
