Mike, I took a closer look at this new Sata. Found something interesting.

It's a 1.3 fluid nozzle, but the hole looked big to me for a 1.3, so I compared it to my 1.4 guns.

This sata 5000 B RP 1.3 has a fluid hole that is larger than both of my other 1.4 guns.

I compared it to LPH400 1.4 and devilbiss gravity plus 1.4, the sata 1.3 is larger than both of these.

I got a decent measurement on both the new Sata 5000 B RP 1.3 and my old Devilbiss 1.4

The Devilbiss measures .055" which is about right for a 1.4

The Sata 1.3 measures .060" which is about a 1.5 !!!

WTF?

Really glad I didn't order the 1.4

Lol.... The rp is suppose to be a conventional setup and hvlp setup that could be why the sizes are different. Was that the air cap or fluid tip

Fluid.

I have a variety of guns, old conventionals, various HVLP, a "compliant" which I would consider very similar to "RP" and yes the pattern shaping holes are different on all of them by design with the HVLP's of course being larger.

But the fluid nozzles.... If they say 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 etc, they should measure 1.2, 3, 4 mm ID.

Here, I'll show ya what I'm looking at.

Here's a round wooden toothpic with tapered end inserted in the end of a devilbiss gravity "plus" gun with a 1.4 fluid tip with needle pulled back. I measured at the face of the nozzle.

1.4mm should be about .055" which is what I got.

And again with the Sata B RP with 1.3

Image

1.3mm should be about .051" but it measures around .060"

I didn't feel like inserting a hard metal pin or drill bit into by brand new spray gun nozzle so I went to my O ring kit and pulled out an R-06 ring and cut it.

The ring measures .060 (as well as you can measure a rubber O ring with a dial caliper)

Pulled the needle back and slid the O ring right inside the fluid tip very effortlessly.

I thread it all the way through the fluid nozzle with the needle pulled out.

I definitely can not fit this cut O ring into any of my other 1.4 guns.

Better turn the fluid knob back lol. I can't explain that buddy. Just drink a red bull before clearing.

I have been using a 5000RP with a 1.4 with sikkens clear for almost a year and a half,it's a good gun and works fine for me.Starting with 3000 series the fluid tips started to get bigger including the 4000,5000,etc.Have you measured the tekna or iwata tips?IMO they are smaller than advertised.Depending on what clear you spray you should always adhere to the tds suggestions .I would run it about 32-35 psi wide open fan and material knobs, spray about 4 inches from the surface and your results will be excellent. Not really a big deal,if you have a 2000Rp they spray very similar to each other.

Really?? 4" spray distance?

Crap, I thought I was going to get back out to about 7 which I am more comfortable with.

But I did measure my Iwata and a devilbiss 1.4 today and they measured 1.4mm (about .0551")

Yeah I spray close and fast at 75% overlap the RP's do work better at a closer distance.Let me know how you like it or dislike it.It is a good gun but for someone that like iwatas they are a different style,rp's are kind of like a run and gun.Really its all personal choice.

well I've got a lot of years of spraying high speed 2k clear for production, pressure fed fluid, conventional air caps, simply flying, lol!

So, I can do it, I'm actually more comfortable spraying fast with the clear, I do like the Iwata's deliberate speed for metallic base coats though.

I'll let you know, I'll try to remember to report back here after the next spray. I'm creeping up on color/clear on my current project.

My local rep dropped off a loaner WS400EVO Iwata today with a 1.3 fluid nozzle.

I measured the fluid hole in the nozzle out of curiosity and it is in fact an honest 1.3mm

Looks like a nice gun, but I'm glad I purchased the Sata 5000. The WS400EVO has a long beak on it, didn't realize until I held it, not a big deal but it makes the gun look considerably larger than the Sata 5000.

I also took a good look at the needle and nozzle of the sata 5000 B RP 1.3

This thing has what looks like 2 full turns from closed needle worth of effective fluid metering, at 2 turns she's wide open and there are no internal tricks about it as far as the "1.3" being sort of hidden inside. The fluid nozzle's final section of fluid passage is about .140" deep and it's actually larger on the inside. It goes from about .095" on the inside to .060" at the very outside face of the fluid nozzle.

It's a 1.5mm gun labeled 1.3

And I'm perfectly cool with it, can't wait to try it.
