Took a class down in SoCal at Coast Airbrush with three West Coast legends in the lowrider's paint scene, Danny D, Armando Serrano & Bugs. There was some real talent in the room and I was definitely the biggest rookie, but everyone was awesome and super supportive. There were some guys in the class that were so good, I couldn't figure out why they were there. Had a great time and learned some pretty good tips. I still got a LONNNG way to go, but definitely picked up some great tips and things to work on (like taping curves!) Cant wait to start again.

Some things that I learned:
1) laying out flames isn't easy
2) Too much candies isn't a good thing
3) DONT get excited and pull the tape too soon
4) HOK candies and pearls are pretty sweet
5) I need to practice cutting tape over tape
6) I need to practice everything else

I would highly recommend the class to anyone interested in that sort of thing.

PD, I'm talking about cutting the overlapping tape such as at the ends of the flame tips.

Cutting through one layer of tape that is over another layer of tape
Then the second cut where I don't want to cut into the BC but need to cut the tape completely.

Which leads me to another question, when you are using either crepe tape or vinyl tape outs for graphics and you have one line of tape going over another line of tape that will be pulled at different times;

Should I cut (on the dashed lines in my sketch) and remove the second (top) tape (red in my sketch) where it crosses over the first tape (green in sketch) so that they all lie in the same plane and to not build up edges?

i use tools like this to push that dotted line down

i also never cut my over lapping tape, i place my razor blade at a 45 degree angle and pull the overlap tape to the blade. no cutting on tape. hope thats not what you learned in that class...

Cool, that helps A LOT!

Not on the flame tips, just when masking out the negative space. Used a combo of masking materials including some real thin wide gold stuff from FBS, it was real easy to see through and cut real easy, just laying the razor on it.

Laid the thin line tape down first, then covered the tape with wide masking material, then cut out the masking using the middle of the thin line tape.

And just what is a "Pearl"?

And do Pearls mostly go over solid colors?

Do Pearls tend to disappear over metallics or flakes?

I was surprised at shooting the pearls, they had a different look than what I had expected..

This last weekend I wanted to get more flake (really, can there ever be enough?) on my test panels as I was waiting for some candy concentrates to arrive.
The panels are the ones in the photos that I posted in this thread on 04/09 and had clear that had dried for more than a week prior to being sanded with 800.

I had two silver panels, and one of them I taped off into two separate sections to try different colors on.
One of the panels I had taped then shot some IC without anything in it to seal the tape edges.

The outdoor temps were over 70 degrees and I had just pulled the can of IC out of the garage’s storage cabinet. The IC was still kinda cool, the panels had warmed up in the sun.

I waited about 15 minutes prior to laying down more IC this time mixed with silver flake. I shot both the panel that had tape and a coat of IC along with the other silver panel that just had the dried and sanded clear.

After another 15 minutes went by I went in to check my panels for another coat and the one taped panel that I had shot IC to seal the tape edges had nice big wrinkles right in the middle. I think that I may have sanded through the clear prior to the tape/first coat of IC, but am not sure.

All four of my other panels that I worked on that day had no problems at all.

* After my first coat of IC to seal the tape, should I have waited longer til I hit it with the second coat of IC?

I didn’t take any photos of the wrinkles as I was busy on the other panels an kinda upset at myself about the wrinkles.
