The vent hole in the cup lid ( Pro Lite) ... I've seen some guys spraying with the cap closed and some with it open. What dictates whether it's open or closed? Thanks

Pro light ? cap should always be open to let in air or you will restrict paint flow.
they probably forgot to open the cap Experienced Trained Certified

The Pro Lite, in fact most Devilbiss cups, has a two part venting system in the lid.
The first part is a small bowl with a hole in the bottom that is cast into the lid itself. This allows paint that has escaped through the hole to drain back in to the cup. The second part is a cap that clips over the open top of the bowl. This cap also has a small hole to allow ventilation or air replacement in to the cup but it also functions to prevent drips coming from paint which has accumulated in the bowl. If you're painting vertical surfaces then having the cap on or off doesn't make a lot of difference but on horizontal surfaces where the gun is tilted right over it is important to have the cap on. Most reputable guns have systems with similar functionality. Star use a push in cap which has the hole in the side so it can be rotated to the high side. Iwata have a cap which is a bit like a snorkel, keeping the opening above the top of the paint in the cup. Only the cheap guns have a hole in a single skin cap (which can result in drips), with the exception of Iwata and Star side mounted aluminium cups where the cup should be kept vertical while the gun body is rotated.
