Hello Everyone,
I am working on a project and have run into something that is way outside my sphere of knowledge.
I have removed all of the windows from a school bus and raised the roof 8". Then I covered all of the window openings with 18 ga. steel.
To keep the steel from rusting I sanded it lightly with 220 grit, wiped it down with acetone then shot it with SEM self etching primer. My goal (last summer) was to get the metal protected until I could paint it.
Summer is coming to an end and I am not ready to paint. And.... I am starting to see some rust colored streaks show through the primer. Really more of a rust colored fog on the areas that did not get quite as much primer.
How do I move forward?
Can I sand it lightly and shoot it with a rusty metal primer?
Should I take it back down to bare metal and start over?
Are there any special primers or rust converters that I should look at?
Any other suggestions?
Thank you.
S.

Dennis is right can't realy make a recommendation with out seeing it. but I'll make a guess statement here. I would sand the self etch off with 80 grit on a D/A then wipe down with WAX/GREASE REMOVER acetone is a poor substitute. then shoot a couple coats of epoxy primer now your good for several years if needed.

Thanks for the replies.
I appreciate your time, knowledge and patience. As I have a lot of real estate to prep I want to be as efficient as I can. I certainly don't want to cut corners but i do recognize that this is not a show car and I am not a paint & body guy. Here are a couple of pictures: |

Tamco has a rust converter spray over anything primer. It's a top notch product. High fill and can be painted over with out sanding up too seven days. At price anyone can afford. Can be thinned to use as a sealer coat.

OK. We have pictures. Any words? |
Yes the Tamco 5311 is their DTM (and rust) primer.
Since I am a rookie weekend hack, I use a lot of Tamco's products due to the price, quality and service. Tammy has replied to me on a Saturday more than once. The president of PPG wont even give me a T-shirt and only talks to Painter Dave! I would sand off most of the rust that I could get to. If you cant get all of the rust off, Shoot a coat of the 5311, then cover with one of their HP-66x (661, 662, 663 just color differences) Epoxy primers. If you can get all of the rust off, Just start with the HP-66x epoxy. I am assuming that you are shooting that behemoth outside and Tamco's epoxy stays soft for longer than something like PPG's DPLV. But you should be ok. I am guessing that this isn't going to be in the next AMBR show. Get some closer photos of the rust and the top of the panel. What state are you located in? Sent by the random thoughts from the voices in my head...
