Well I'm finally ready for paint, it's been a long road so say the least. I am a former bodyman and painter but haven't painted a car in 20 years. A lot has changed since then so I come here looking for some guidance. I would love to paint the car in my home de-tached garage. It's equiped with a permanently mounted exhaust fan and a 7.5 hp Omega industrial compressor. I have 2 paint guns, a Devilbiss FLG4 and a Tekna Pro. I have never sprayed waterborne basecoats, just wondering if anyone has used waterbase in their backyard shop? In my local area Shopline appears to be the choice of DIY guys, I'm guessing mainly because it's the lower priced alternative. One of my jobbers sells Axalta. I am wondering if Axalta solvent base is a better choice for a backyard shop?

can't really be of any help, I've only use some water based primer. In your home shop why not use solvent base? if you do study up on application its probably not like your use to. nice car and nice shop.

Thanks Jay, 7 years ago I decided I needed a hobby so I thought why not buy an old car. The car actually looked like a very solid car but once I got it home and started cleaning up the bottom I found a lot of poor repairs and coverups. Long story short, I built a rotisserie and went to work. Everything has either been replaced or stripped to bare metal, inside and out. If I can get this painted before winter is over, I should be driving it this summer. Here's to hoping.

Nice job on the car.

I have zero experience with water based products and personally don't want to learn. Took me way too long to get the solvent based application down. LOL

Also, I have not heard of anyone singing the praises of the water based and how they are so thankful they came along.

I really like the Automotive Art Motobase LV. It mixes 1:1 so you get two sprayable gallons plus it covers great.
Order it from: chad sperry <[email protected]> and the price usually includes shipping to your door.

Highly recommend you "activate" your base coat. This done by mixing a cap full of clear coat activator into your base before spraying.

You can get clear coat from this site by hitting the Store Front button above. I have tried a couple of them and like the Euro Clear and the High Gloss.

If you are new to this the Euro Clear might be a better choice. Plan to shoot a minimum of 3 coats and choose the "slow" activator. This will allow the clear to lay down better but requires longer flash times.

There are many suppliers of of Solvent based products that will ship to your door.
UNLESS you are in the Republic of California and then you'll need to make a drive to Nevada maybe Oregon, Arizona or? to get a quality product.

Water born works its just no fun for first time users without good airflow and heat.
I have used the water Born stuff on Aircraft before and don't really care for it myself.

Thanks for the replies, I found out today that one of my local jobbers carries BASF products so I'm leaning towards one of their solvent bases. Not sure yet if it's Glasurit or RM, I'll give them a call on Monday. I used Diamont back in the 80's and 90's so I know they have a good product and reputation.

Got a price on base, clear and all the reducers and activators, $3200 Cdn. Needless to say I was a bit shocked since I haven't purchased paint for almost 20 years. I also see that Automotive Art is sold here in Canada.

I use the Automotive Art Motobase LV on most projects today. Excellent coverage and fairly easy to spray. Usually about 50 - 60% cheaper than the big name paints.
Sprayed RM Diamont in the past and it is top of the line stuff but they charge big time for it.

Get a price on Automotive Art products just to compare. I have never shot their clear coat line so can't comment on that.
