Hello All,
Which spray gun would you choose for bc/cc applications for a budget of $400.00? I've painted maybe a dozen cars or so beginning it the 80's with suction type guns then later with a Satajet 3000 b HVLP. I use a HVLP at work almost daily to paint various items (non automotive). BTW, the Sata was a great gun but it didn't lay the clear as flat as I expected for a top of the line gun although I only painted maybe 4 cars with it. I'm a professional detailer though so sanding/buffing still delivered a superior finish. It was just more work than expected.

Anyhow, I am looking at the following guns either new or used with a budget of $400.00.

1) Satajet 3000 b
2) Satajet 4000 b
3) Devilbiss GTi Pro Lite
4) Sagola 3300 GTO

Which one of the above would you recommend or do you have another recommendation whether a different model or brand? Also, do the RP versions deliver superior results versus the HVLP versions?

Your input is appreciated......

God Bless,
Ralph

Hello Ralph,

First off i seen on another forum you got recommended a Sagola...

i cant say this is a bad or good recommendation, the reason being there is to many questions not asked before making a recommendation.

What basecoat are you spraying ?
what size of jobs are you looking to do ?
do you also want to clear with this gun ?
etc etc

SATA 3000 is the worst gun ever produced by SATA do not use it.

the other forum you are getting advise from sells Sagola and that is the only gun they will recommend whether it is good for you or not.

so can you answer some more questions ?

Hey PainterDave. I didn't realize you had replied so sorry so late. I pulled the trigger on a brand new like SATA 4000 b HVLP (1.3) digital at an excellent price. All the other "used" SATA's looked pretty rough. I really wanted the RP version but this was the best price I could get on a like new SATA. The guy is throwing in a pps adapter also.

I just want to paint the hood, bumper and mirrors on our '07 BMW which we are turning over to our daughter (silver). I then need to paint the hood and maybe roof on our SUV (black). I'm just a hobbyist when it comes to cars having only painted maybe 12 or more in 35 years or so but I do use an HVLP at work regularly (non automotive) and consider myself quite good or fairly good at it.

Anyhow, I've always gotten very good results with the cars I painted but only with some cutting and buffing afterward to correct orange peel. I never suffer from runs and even sags are fairly rare. I owned a SATA 3000b HVLP 1.3 and it did a good job but it still left some orange peel that need correcting? I think my results were in part due to my technique though, so maybe you folks can correct where necessary.

1. I typically sprayed from 8in to 10in from the vehicle which apparently is out of it's sweet spot? I have read between 4in and 6in is best for SATA? I'm not used to painting so close to the surface but if that is best that is what I will do....

2. Maybe my painting process was less than ideal?

a) I would prime the vehicle. Afterward I would wet sand and then thoroughly clean
it.

b) A few days later I would spray the base coat. I would always hit the
cracks and hard angles first (same with cc) similar to cutting in a bedroom with
house painting. I would allow it to flash (always) and then I would apply 2 or 3 coats
to the entire vehicle or until I was satisfied of coverage. I would allow the bc to dry
for a few hours and then I would immediately apply the clear coat. So bc/cc would
be the same day or at least within 24 hrs.

c) My first clear coat would be fairly light. I would then follow that up with 1 or
2 heavier coats of clear. My last coat of clear would go on as heavy as I could
confidently apply without fear of a causing a run.

d) My overlap was only about 60 percent.

e) I always used PPS automotive paints (bc, cc). It's been 12 years since I painted a
car though so I'm not sure what is available or best now?

Anyhow, this time around I will insure to spray with a wide open fan at about 6 inches with a 70 to 80 percent overlap. I would never use the technique the GunMan uses in his videos though. I attempt to be mechanical and precise when spraying. The Gunman sprays a little more fluidly or loosely with a huge amount of overlap. He appears to lay it on quite heavy with his technique and I do not see how he doesn't suffer constant runs? He is obviously quite good though.

Your input is appreciated.

God Bless,
Ralph

Thanks PainterDave! It will most likely be a few months before I can paint the vehicle but I will definitely post some before and after images.

Thanks PainterDave. A genuine SATA 5000 b RP 1.3 digital was just listed on Eb_y at a killer price so I jumped on it. They were clearing out some overstock items and the gun was rarely used. The Seller of the 4000 HVLP I purchased has agreed to cancel that order.

God Bless,
Ralph
