The good news is that it appears I'll be able to sand out the majority of my clear coat defects from lack of talent. I'm starting the few spots that are going to be visible on my body tub, so I can get the tub back onto chassis this weekend. Since I also started with the tub painting, it's also got some of the worst of the orange peel / dry spray. Isn't there a saying about polishing a turd
The bad news is that I'm struggling to get the scratches out. But apparently, after some research on this forum, I'm hardly the first person to have this problem.
I'm using the basic HF rotary polisher I've had for years. I'm using cheap foam pads, compound, polish, finish. I'm using M105, M205, and 7 Glaze. I am wet sanding with 1000, 1500, 2000 by hand using a small block. CC is Transtar 6861 that has was shot about 10 days ago.
As you can see from the photos, I'm getting fairly close to flat. As close as I'm going to take it given where I started. But the M105 isn't cutting the sanding scratches.
And from my research here, I need to order a wool pad and the M100. Correct? I'll reach out to the local paint shop in the morning, if they don't have it, I'll be waiting on Amazons new 5-7 day prime shipping.

one thing i only tried for a minute is foam pads on a rotary. went right back to wool.
the m100 and wool pad is wicked badass. however, m105 on a wool pad will get r done but not as quick and good as m100 and a twisted wool pad. the 105 also dusts a crapton. |
Twisted wool and Meguiars M-100 on a rotary will clear that right up. The M100 blows the M105 out of the race in cutting and being filler free. 1968 Coronet R/T

Thanks to both of you for the confirmation. Interestingly enough, I was able to order Wool Pads, and M100 from Oreilly's and they claim it would be ready for pickup at noon today. I'm not optimistic given COVID it will be there that quickly but let's hope.
I'll update some pics after I give it a shot. Maybe my fumblings will be helpful to someone down the road who decides that doing a full restoration on a "free" 45 year old British car is a good idea |

Wool pad and M100 for the win! Not going to win a Ridler but it should clean up okay for a nice driver level restoration.
