i’m going to be replacing a door on a buddies kids car. he hit a pole and scratched and dented the door. they were quoted 1900 to fix. i told them i would do it for them, as a learning experience. i ended up getting another door, but need to change the colour. i’m in the process of sanding and scuffing the old paint to put urethane ss black on it. i have a couple questions:
1. there is a small plastic stone chip protector on the rear edge of the door. can i scuff this and paint over it, or does it need to come off and be replaced? i’m not sure if it is already printed body colour, or is clear.

2. i was originally going to epoxy prime first, then either paint or high build. the urethane primer i have is nason select prime 421-10. it is a dtm primer, so do i need the epoxy first, or could i go straight to the urethane primer? i do have a couple small spots where i got down to metal. there will be no filler used.
3. if the urethane is applied over the entire door, do i need to seal it after with epoxy reduced, or because the shade should be even over the whole door, can i put paint directly over the urethane primer? tech sheet says i can.
4. this is the kids first car, and his second time hitting this pole!! the car is nothing special, and has other issues, so probably only be around a few years if that. i do want to do it properly, but also don’t need show car restoration type results. thx.

Ya If you have a True DTM primer you can go directly to base coat. no sealer required.

For Max adhesion Epoxy first then 2K hi build, Sand Primer re-apply and sand as required then Base coat then clear coat. No sealer required.

Sealer is a Kind of a seal coat to double ck sanding imperfections before Base coat basically it is supposed to increase adhesion between Primer and Base if its an epoxy type? if not why use it?

The sealer I use is made with My Epoxy I use over my Bare metal in all cases.

If the existing paint is still in good condition then just dust some primer or sealer over the rub throughs and go straight to your top coats over P600 or P800 sanded surface.

Technically you should remove the stone chip protective piece. In a lot of production work this is just painted over but the choice is up to you. Just a piece of self adhesive clear plastic cut to the right size and shape. How many stone chips is it going to get on a kids' toy?

thx. i was thinking i might get away with just a quick coat of epoxy, and no urethane primer. i’ll see what it looks like when i finish sanding it.

sounds like the piece i’m talking about is a rock guard film. think i’ll just take it off, and paint under it. then try to find a new piece.

It's just a chip guard. you can probably check with a body shop near you and they would probably give you a piece to do that with. it just sticks on like tape.
