I am going to paint these interior pieces (not the carpet) with some BC/CC as I am installing new carpet.

This is to hold me over until I get some more leather delivered.

It is old old vinyl. I am going to clean the heck out of it.

* Should I use some HOK AP01 (adhesion promotor) or a light coat of thinned epoxy first?

This car is far from a daily driver and only comes out when the sun is shining, it’s not too hot not too cold type of day.

I have restored a lot of old vinyl and have always felt that the thinner you can keep the "prep. work" the better. I always use adhesion promoter. I have seen epoxy "crack up" on old vinyl, never had that happen with the adhesion promoter.

When I did this years ago I used actual Vinyl dye Paints from PPG, They had special cleaners and such for doing it always came out great.

I personally would not use regular automotive type paints on it myself, Even though we use them on plastic bumpers and other pieces.
I just feel that the Interior pieces are better treated with actual products designed for them real Vinyl dyes and Plastic pieces are better left to specialty products in my opinion.

I was repainting actual Vinyl seats covers with their stuff and it worked fantastic wouldn't rub off crack or peal and was hard to scratch and had UV protection in it.

So many plastics use wax for the mold release it can cause a real nightmare.

SEM also makes an aerosol Vinyl Prep. that reads about the same as that one.....

Agree.

Axalta have plastic/vinyl binders (flat and semi-gloss) in the Cromax range. I've used it often and it works a treat.

Well, those weren't the answers that I wanted to hear!!

I guess on Tuesday I will call around and see if one of the jobbers carry those lines. Our one jobber in town turned into an @$$ wipe a couple of years ago, so I need to go a town or two over.

I could not find a stock SEMs color that was close to what I need.

* Can a jobber match a vinyl dye color like they do with paints?
* Do I just ask for PPG vinyl dye?

I'm trying to match the darker brown that I used on my lower dash pieces.

With the Axalta system you can colour match to almost anything by eye or you can use the formulae in the system for L400 Acrylic.

It's not a dye, rather a paint that is coloured with tinters, just like any other. The binder is specific to vinyls and plastics.

For this overhead console in my car I just matched by eye. It's actually a much better match than it appears in the photo where the light plays tricks on the colour.

A quick update on (one of) my latest rookie weekender projects; After reading your guy’s advice I searched around my local areas for someone that would custom mix some interior coating. I kept coming up empty as no one wanted to do any custom mixes and only wanted to sell me cans of Sems Color Coat. I like Sems but I could not find a color close to what I wanted.

I finally found a shop that is about an hour and a half away that (keyword) “said” that they could custom mix what I wanted. So the next day I headed out with my sample spray out card, got there, asked for the guy that I was told to ask for. He then told me that he couldn’t match a color and pointed to a stack of factory color books and told me that if I found a factory code that he could mix that up. After about an hour of searching through a bunch of 40 year old plus books and coming up with nothing I gave up and headed back.

Now, feeling quite deflated along with a big ol waste of time and diesel money (fuel prices are up if you hadn’t noticed) and not having any idea of what to do and since both PD and NFT5 live too far away, I decided to try my original approach. I figured that;
A) I plan on recovering in leather eventually anyways
B) I didn’t really have any other option at the time
C) the car is a 20 footer anyways and lives its life as a puff cake garage (wannabee) queen, so it doesn’t really get that much expose to the sun

The pieces came out pretty well, I metal worked the tins as flat as I could and recovered them in some vinyl that I had. Then I used light coats for the BC, no AP (forgot?) and two light coats of my cheap satin clear. I didn’t like the way the arm rest pads came out as it was too monotone so I used some of the leather that I had left over and covered the arm rest pads and eliminated the rear window switches. Eventually the door panels will get the same treatment (except the window switches)

So far so good, I will see how it lasts. No one really sits in the back as my kids are all growed up and gone.
