LOOKING at it agian, that one with the primer showing might take 3 coats. fill it and squeegee it off let it dry a couple days, then do it agian. try and keep the film thickness down to a minimum each time so it will harden good.

Thanks…I blocked them all down at lunch today, the rest of the car will get blocked in a few weeks…the amount of surrounding paint I am taking off is minimal, and I have to sand all the panels down to remove orange peel anyway….I think I have enough paint….most of the areas I am working on got painted several solid coats, had defects, got wet sanded and painted a few coats again….so decent coverage to work with….I used a block about the size of a 50 cent piece light touch…

It’s a low of 27, high of 50 ish here…so it looks like any more touch up will wait a bit….I pushed the last batch…it was not as cold…..but cured ok…

Following up…single stage painted October 2022, cured over the winter…

Started color sanding the entire trunk lid panel over the fisheye repair..it’s not quite done, needs detail work, but not bad for a first time amateur…the fisheye repairs are a success, first time sanding, I didn’t destroy it and it looks better that when I started!

I tried various techniques, this is what I ended up with…wet sand soft foam block w 3m..
1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, then 3M Perfect It with 6 inch foam pads on orbital buffer….

I tried starting with 1500 but could not get the Orange peel down efficiently…..
Opinions and tips welcomed….wondering if I should be more aggressive, it took 7 hours to do the trunk lid…

Because you were using a soft block. It just follows the shape of the OP and takes paint off in the lows, as well as the highs. You need a very hard block - I use a piece of plastic sheet about 70 x 150 mm. Hard foam, like the Dura Block, will also work, maybe not quite as aggressively. That way you only take off the highs and the levelling process is much quicker. It will also preserve the thickness in the lows. Sand, squeegee, sand again...until all the darker spots disappear.

Looking at those photos the problem is not just orange peel but a level of dryness from holding the gun too far away. Should be able to be corrected though, provided the surface underneath was flat and you put enough clear on. Be careful near edges and body lines.

Chris, this is single stage, no clear…I am sanding color…so far, I have not ruined anything…currently working on passenger quarter panel….the drivers quarter, trunk lid buffed out nice…other parts are in various stages…

The problem with hard blocks is no part of this car is flat….the quarters are rounded up and down, as well as bulge out over the rear tires…I have durablock, but even the 6 inches only contacts the paint about 2 inches at a time….there’s a few parts of the car where I can use the hard block but not many…

I knew that. My mistake in saying "clear" when I meant "paint".

I know the problem. That's why I made some blocks to overcome it. See this post. These things make short work of orange peel and follow the curves. Hard, but flexible.
