BTW- would an onyx black be of the non- metallic variety?

No, Onyx Schwarz (622) is a black with gold and copper pearl. Not what you want at all.

You need to be very careful in identifying paint colours by name. Quite often there are different names in different geographical markets and the colours can vary in different areas for paints that have the same name. Always identify paint colours by the paint code.

The Hyundai Ebony colour comes in a range of "strengths", mainly according to the country of manufacture. Most are just Jet Black but some have some red in the mix as well and a few have a little white. Small quantities so you probably wouldn't notice unless you put it side by side with another variant or, of course, were trying to match the colour on a car (which you aren't). The best are the ones with Paint Code "C" or "EB", but not "EB5".

I would just stick with the Toyota colour I gave you. Toyota are much more consistent with their colours than Hyundai although, having said that, I do know of a Toyota silver that has over 130 variants.

Thanks guys- as you can see the pictures of the BMW and Sonata grey out pretty bad in the sun. Anyhow, on advice of badsix and the Plymouth black I stumbled upon Chrysler 300 and think it greys the least, and it's a pretty good black

But which black?

My system shows eight different blacks used on the Chrysler 300. It demonstrates why it is so important to identify colours by the colour code, not the name.

This one is a satin (not high gloss) and has white and red in the formula - so not really black.

This one has white, red and yellow.

This one has a finely ground mica that makes it milky, plus a coarse aluminium flake, a xirallic (very bright) blue pearl and a violet pearl. Not a solid black at all.

You can't rely on photos on the internet. Apart from the fact that they're mostly low resolution, there are just too many other variables. If you want a solid black then you have to look at the formula used to make up the colour. This is why I recommended the colours that I did.

Gosh- now my head is spinning after you just posted all that. I would guess Phantom black, but there's probably a caveat in there.. But I'd also venture to say the PXT rather than the LXT Pearl hue.............

My point exactly. Just stick with the colours I suggested. They should be readily available in off the shelf spray cans or you could go to an automotive paint distributor, most of whom can make up spray cans to the formula for any given paint code.

Yeah- thanks, NFT- I am gravitating back to the Toyota black, saw one while walking thru the parking lot to Tomasita's yesterday and that made the decision. So hey- stripping down to bare naked aluminum frame- what kind of primer do I want- self etching?

Aluminium? I wouldn't take it back to bare metal - the factory coating will give you much better protection than any 1K spray can product. Alternatives are complex and expensive.... and come in 4 litre tins which would give you enough to do 100 bikes.

Just scuff the existing paint with red Scotchbrite. This is much easier to use on the curves and shapes of a bike. Make sure you scuff thoroughly. I'm sure I've heard of 2K epoxy now available in spray cans. If you can get some then this would make an excellent primer and sealer under the topcoats. Otherwise you're probably limited to a 1K automotive primer.
