There are compounds specifically for working stainless that are usually used with a floor mounted buffer but you can use a drill adaptor. Auto parts stores can carry the adapters and pads. For more info you might look at eastwoodco.com in the compound section (page 4 I think). There is a cutting and polishing compound. Hope that helps, if nothing else their site will tell you what you need to look for. Dave :) :)

Yeah ive recently tried to polish my engine but its alot of time and work.
Remove all the parts and get a Buffer for Your Bench grinder. Dont go cheap on the pad it matters lots..
I got one from HD with the stiching all the way up for about $10.00
Also the compouds come in many many different types. Be sure YOU use the one for ss and not the aluminum.

Eastwood is probably one of the best shops for this job definitely give them a look.

Another tip is to use ONE compound per buff pad, do NOT mix compounds. SS is a hard metal so it will take some patience if it isnt smooth you might be best off starting off by taking a superfine belt type sander to it, to cut the grain down as small as possible.
The smoother it is the faster it will buff out on the wheel.
Dont overload the buff pad w/ compound.

Gdluck!
